Greetz!
After many unsuccessfull attempts to connect to my sql server 2008 enterprise instance on my local windows server 2008 Enterprise I finally gave up , uninstalled Sharepoint 2010 and Sql Server and reinstalled SQL Server. I used a Domain User Account I setup in AD as the SQL Adminstrator (I have AD running on virtual machine DEV\AD) and used mixed mode authentication when installing sql. After the install completed I'm still not able to connect!
I had been conecting fine for awhile and using Sharepoint to learn. Then one day I tried to connect and couldn't I turned off Windows Firewall and made sure remote connections was enabled but no luck. I used the administrator account to login to the machine I was trying to do this on.
When I reinstalled I wasn't able to see how to check if remote connections was enabled.
Maybe it was some updates to Windows but after a full reinstall of SQL Server I should eb able to connect!
Attached is a screenshot of the error and the install log. I hope something jumps out at someone as I have alot of learning to do on Sharepoint 2010!
Thanks,
Rich

SOLVED:
I used only the machinename and left out '\MSSQLSERVER'.
Amateur mistake.
