Cannot connect to Instance_3 but can connect to instance_2

Any idea why I cannot connect to instance_3 of a server where I can connect to instance_2 ?
win2K with sql2k sp3a
This server resides on an other domain ( fulltrusted ). This server has been aliased because of interdomainproblems with virtual instances (FQN).
I can connect to instance_3 when using servername,portnr
The problem is manifests when using sql-auth as well as when using Win-auth.
Aparently a coworker can connect using the instancename, but not always

Is 445 UdP blocked sometimes? Are the servers setup on specific ports?

Instance_2 is using port 2446
Instance_3 is using port 2072
they reside at the same server.
Regarding the udp 445 : I have always been able to connect to instance_2, I can connect to instance_3 when I specify the portno in the connection, but I cannot connect using the instance name.
So I guess I need not to concern with the udb properties, correct ?
Now I'm using sms-netmon to find out what's goin on
