As a rule, I like to grant permission to the SQL Server Service account for the Perform volume maintenance tasks policy. However, on occasion the button to Add User or Group is disabled. I have seen this on several different servers, even though I have admin rights. Can anyone tell me why this is?

What is the icon to the side of the policy, 2 computers with a little script in the bottom left, or a torn page with 10010 on it?

Its the 2 computers with the script.
I think I know what you're going to say next - group policy is preventing a change?

Yep thats the one, GPO is the culprit.
Ask your domain admin to create a particular GP for the computer in question to allow the account the nessesary access.
