Can we use evaluation edition setup to install our production 2 node cluster, once the license is purchased ?

  • Hi,

I have SQL Server 2012 Evaluation Edition downloaded.

We are purchasing SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition license shortly.

Once we purchase the license, can we use this evaluation edition setup to install our production 2 node cluster ?

I understand that binaries are same for evaluation and enterprise editions, and only the proper product key should be provided once the license is purchased.

    Kindly confirm.

    Thanks in advance,

    San.

  • Confirmed. During the setup, you can enter the key you purchased instead of selecting "evaluation".

  • If you install the clustered instance as evaluation edition and then wish to upgrade there will be an issue. This link details the upgrade paths from evaluation to

    • SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (Server+CAL or Core License)
    • SQL Server 2012 Business Intelligence
    • SQL Server 2012 Standard
    • SQL Server 2012 Developer
    • SQL Server 2012 Web

Upgrading from Evaluation Enterprise (a free edition) to any of the paid editions is supported for stand-alone installations, but is not supported for clustered installations.

  • Perry, thanks for the information. I was not aware of this issue.

I'm under the impression that the OP just wants to know if he can use the evaluation setup kit to install Enterprise Edition with the new license key he purchased. If this is the case, it's perfectly doable.

    Perry,

Thanks for the info. Even I was not aware about it.

    spaghettidba,

You are right, I just wanted to know if I can use that set up to install cluster instance in physical servers newly built.

Currently I have installed it in a test machine and I am NOT going to upgrade that. We won't be using that instance once it expires.

Thanks for the confirmation, I will go ahead and install it using the same setup.

    Thanks,

    San.
