Can we Install 2 different editions of SQL Server 2005 in a single cluster

  • I am facing problem in installing SQL server 2oo5.The situation is we have Clustered configured sql sever. And already we are running 1 instance of SQL server 2005 STANDARD Edition in this cluster. Now we want to install a new SQL Server 2005 ENTERPRISE Edition Instance in the same cluster.

So can you please make your expert comments that is these 2 different Editon Instances will not face any issue running in same cluster in Our LIVE environment !!

  • You can have multiple instances and I know clusters can support this, so I wouldn't expect an issue, but I have not specifically tried this. I think if you have Enterprise, then you can have multiple instances on the cluster and wouldn't need Standard.

Hopefully someone has done this and can respond.

  • Thank you ,

But i have already installed standard edition and then we want 1 more instance of nterprise edition ?

  • Installing Enterprise will upgrade the standard edition. Enterprise should cover both instances.

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Do you have to purchase additional license for another instance?

  • As long as you're running with within the same OS session (a.k.a not talking about VM's), no - one set of licenses covers your instances.

If you're talking VM's there's another set of rules (depending on what version of SQL you own).
