Hi Folks,
I have recently tried deploying an ASP.Net 4 web site on a clients Exchange server but could not install SQL Server Express 2008. It appeared to be installing and did not throw any errors but after the process seemed to complete there was no sign of SQL anywhere. No SQL Service or anything. I have heard that one reason is the Microsoft does not allow SQL Express 2008 to be installed onto commercial Servers/Environments, could someone please confirm whether this is the case?
Kind Regards in advance.

Nope, you can use it as you wish, commercially or otherwise. Maybe the installer failed and rolled back? If you're installing it via the normal installer, there should be a setup log somewhere. This is the KB for SQL 2008 that shows where to find it, but not sure if it's different for Express Edition:

Wow, that was a quick response....
Thanks, I wouldn't of thought of that, will retry again this weekend.
Many thanks for the confirmation.
Kind regards

The version which you are not allowed to use 'commercially' is Developer Edition

Great,
I was aware of that but was just uncertain if it
applied to Express.
many thanks.

Hi Guys,
I managed to download an express version of Sql Server 2008 express version (64 bit) and it installed just fine.
For some reason my initial installation attempt just did not work, and that was off a disc i obtained for free with a Sams Asp.net 4 book with no Management Studio client interface... but i checked to see for any SQL Services and found none... but the downloaded version installed just fine.
Many thanks to all for the advice... its good to get some advice..
Thanks again.
