Can I resize tempdb to a smaller size - then bounce server later to take affect?

  • Currenty we have a sql2000 server with a tempdb of 15GB (it is set that way). It no longer needs to be that large. I would like to set it to 10GB while it is up and running. Later in the week we will bounce servers after applying patches and I would like it to take affect then. Is this do-able? Since we are bouncing anyway - I am trying to avoid bringing down SQL or setting it to single user mode.

  • I don't think its possible. You have to restart mssql services to resize tempdb. Its possible with other user databases but not with tempdb. the way to do this is in this article.
