Can anyone share their experience using SQL Server 2012 clustering on an SBM share?

  • Based on this link, http://www.globbtv.com/microsite/18/Adjuntos/TR-4108.PDF, I'm thinking that it may be possible to build a three node SQL Server 2012 cluster using SMB shares. Ideally, we would like to try this on VMware. Originally, we were planning to build a three node cluster on VMware for lab testing using RDM (Raw Device Manager) to share the cluster disks, but our internal VMware team indicated that using VMware RDM on more than two virtual machines is not supported. SMB shares may be a way around that issue.

Can anyone share their experience with SQL Server 2012 clustering (in a non-VMware environment) while using SMB shares?

Are there any reasons it would be unwise (from a performance standpoint, etc.) to pursue building (or not possible to build) a SQL Server 2012 cluster on VMware using SMB shares, assuming that network throughput is not an issue?

By the way, this question is related to a former post: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1611433-2799-1.aspx

  • I ran across this link, in case anyone is looking for the same kind of information.

“Yes, today you can create an entire cluster based on SMB File shares.”

  • I'd still like to hear from someone who has actually created a (physical or virtual) cluster using SMB shares.
