Byte Me: Private Cloud

Putting your data in the cloud: that's then you save a backup to external disk, and then have it boosted up the Space Station for safe keeping; right? :Wow:

Right. The Russians take it to the space station.

That makes so much more sense than keeping my USB drive in the bank safe deposit box. I'm glad we've got smart folks like Mark Zuckerberg and Disney inventing stuff like this to keep our data safe from ISIL and online hackers.

I think the NSA is considering getting into the cloud storage business too. 😛

But only for specific cell phone companies. I heard that the NSA had sent out texts to customers of certain cell phone companies asking them to change companies because it was harder for them to intercept all transmissions.

They only request that of customers who are actually on the Homeland Security watch list; for obvious reasons.

Going back the topic of the Zuckerberg - Disney cloud data venture, I hear they have two other regional data centers. One is a Little Mermaid themed "oceanic metropolis" submerged off the coast of Orlando Florida and dedicated solely to the archival of cat videos posted to FaceBook. The other is a "Frozen" themed "ice palace" in Kuujjuaq, Canada mostly for remote backups of iPhone user photo galleries and digitized NSA phone wiretaps. Both are solar powered with coal buring backup generators.

We are looking at going further afield. However as Venus is already 'cloud' covered we have asked the Martians to tender! 🙂

I was in a shop at the weekend and they were selling external hard drives as 'Private Clouds'! Things like this are not going to help the general publics understanding...

I might throw some dry ice in the office waste basket later and as a cloud appears ask "Who binned the cloud?" 🙂

Are you talking about one of those wireless home routers with a build in disk drive for backups and file sharing? I guess we could call that a "private cloud" ... although if not configured correctly it could also be a public cloud too.

Nope, hard disc with USB cable...

Heh - like the term isn't over-used and the marketing doesn't confuse people enough already. No wonder people are confused about the increasingly-nebulous term.

And here I thought it was an increasingly cumulus term. A term which, coincidentally, could also be applied to any table without a clustered index

Know why they call it "the cloud"? The Marketing department didn't think "server room without a door" or "server room you don't own" would sell.

    :w00t:;-);-)

    I actually know this!!!

Clouds were used in diagramming to represent the WAN part of a network (including using it to represent the Internet). This became a popular marketing term (possibly) influenced by the book "From Clouds to Code".
