  • A little misunderstanding Boss. WHAAAAT!!! THIS IS NOT A MISUNDERSTANDING!!!!! THIS IS YOU NOT USING THOSE HOLES ON THE SIDE OF YOUR HEAD!!!! ORNAMENTS!!!! Boss, burn and turn do sound similar and I really thought I heard a b and not a t. GET OUT OF MY SIGHT BEFORE I REMOVE YOU MYSELF!!! JUST GET OUT!!!!

Oh my, I had a database crash and I lost 14 days of data. No, no, my backups and even log shipping was in place but the Server IT thought I used up too much space on his server and forced me to delete and stop all my backups. The tape backup will pickup the database files so we have backup, he said. Database files cannot be copied unless the service is stopped or the database is taken offline, I said. No, but backup exec can pick it up. We lost the database completely, (as if deleted) and backup exec did not pick up the database files. If it was not for me having copied a backup to my pc before we deleted all the backups two weeks prior we would have lost all our data.

Now that was funny. Scary believing it is true.

  • It is really sad but "get it in writing" has saved me a good number of times when people have claimed that they DIDN'T say what they actually did.

  • Like my niece who stopped at the petrol pumps to put R 200.00 of petrol. When the attendant (this is SA not USA, we have petrol attendants and we call it petrol not gas) finished he put R 300.00 of petrol in. "But Ma'am, you said R 300.00." I would have exploited the situation and got R 100.00 petrol free. She paid it.:w00t::w00t:

  • I try to get things in writing but is usually fails as our senior management tend to respond to an email a few hours later by walking into the office when you are concentrating on something else. By the time your brains syncs you have the answer but no paper trail...

The cartoon reminded me of an event over 25 years ago. The company I worked for them had employed a Computer Science graduate who gave the impression he =knew everything about everything to do with programming/databases/networking/etc. This made him the blue eyed boy. I started to have my doubts when he wrote a piece of software, in C, to enquire a database as t took three minutes to get a response. It turned out he was unfamiliar with indexing! Anyway he survived that but a few years later he went to a client's site to do some changes on their database. It turned out his knowledge of Boolean was weak and he deleted all entries in one table. Although the client's database was backed up on a nightly basis they no longer trusted him and basically escorted him off site. I then had to race to site and install the backup watched by a then very nervous client. Everything turned out fine but it was mid-night when finished. However the client did buy me a very expensive lunch some weeks later.

You can always send the "As you asked at my desk this morning, I shall..." type of email. Unless they refute it you have evidence. If they refute it you don't do it. Problem solved. If they ask you to stop sending those kind of emails as why and be VERY wary.
