This reminded me of a situation I was in over a decade ago. Many people had been axed in a restructure and I felt that the only reason I survived was that I was the only person that understood the business that we supplied analysis tools for. After feeling I was in a rut for over two years I left of my own accord. The company survives in a way but with now 90% less staff than in its peak!

Reminds me of my uncle who worked at a auto manufacturing plant along with his son. When his son complained to his mom that dad just sat around all day his dad explained that he was there for when something went wrong. That's when he showed his real value.
