Building cubes with SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio 2005

  • Hi,

I've been initiating myself to SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio 2005 and have never built cubes with a microsoft product (I used Cognos Transformer).

I get to the point of deploying the cube and can browse it... The question I have is what's next?  how do users access this cube? where is the cube located?

Compared with Cognos products this is really not user friendly... Or maybe I just need to better understand the Microsoft product.

Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You

  • you have to use the PivotTable with Excel or FrontPage....

For connection you can use the wizard after you inserted the control (Microsoft PivotTable 10,11 ...) in the page

  • you can also make the cube available to Powerplay, for a simple test, go to program files|cognos..|tools|Powerplay Connect.  Change the server type from the remote cognos to msssodbo (or which ever one has a lot of "s"'s in it ).  This creates a little mdc that you can then point PPlay at, which in turn gets routed to the AS cube.  Note that the mdc (it is just a pointer after all)never gets updated (ie the create date is the date you created it, not the last cube refresh), plus you may also want to review your MSSSodbo settings (its in the cognos config tool).  My favourite setting is the one described in the hlp file as (my words) "you can have it fast or you can have it right"    basically all to do with null/empty suppresion.

  • Just for your information, The current version of PowerPlay is not compliant to AS2005 database. Actually, the entire Cognos product line is not compatible with SQL Server 2005 components.

I dont know the exact schedule but I've been told that PPlay will not be compliant before mid 2006 and then it will not leverage all the new features of AS2005...

  • As far as front-end goes, I did have a look at a few tools that claim to be compliant to AS2005 but only two of them deliver a true BI front-end that leverage all of AS2005 features:

    Panorama
    Proclarity

Here are the other tools I hade a look at

    DataJungle
    BI Portal
    Report Portal

The OWC 11 from Microsoft does not leverage all of AS2005 features and I was told not to expect anthing from Microsoft before Office 12.

  • No suprise on the panorama front, and proclarity have always been at or near the top of the heap for AS client tools.  I'm suprised that PPlay doesn't/won't work with AS2K5 - I thought that even though the comms have moved to XMLA under the covers, the OLEDB driver should/would still be usable for existing tools that support OLEDB connections?
