thanks... I got another question. If I want to go back to the previous build after I install a service pack how can I do that? (I don't need to do at present .. I just want to know what my options are if I install a bad patch).

First step to do before actually launching any upgrade/hotfix = backup ALL databases !
This way you are safe to at least a reinstall up to your current software level.
Most of the times, a fallback scenario is published with the sp / cumulative update / hotfix package. (KB)

Can I install the 9.0.3054 fix without installing the patches before it (I am on SP2)?

Patches are cumulative of other patches since the last service pack.

how come this security update is not in this list?
September 17, 2008 at 10:24 am
It is now!

thanks Steve.. In case I was misunderstood I wasn't asking the question to catch you out - I wasn't sure if that security update was a different class of update than the ones on your list that were cumulative so I thought I better ask.. thanks for your assistance.

Is there any case where you should not use WSUS to install a SQL update?
September 18, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Nope, good to call me out. I probably am missing more.
I've not really used WSUS since I want control over when and where they are applied to which machines. I don't think there is any other fundamental reason why you can't do this.

I'm still inivestigating the cause for this issue, but I suspect the automatic updates just ruined my 24/7 (MOM) db server.

I must admit, at the plant where I have my own desk, we don't use automatic updates, but we plan downtime to do controlled software maintenance whenever the production part is in technical maintenance.
The other plants, each have their own customs.
Last wednessday I got only involved because I needed to stop and restart sqlagent at this cluster, doing so I was the first to suffer this issue.
If I hadn't been the one, probably they would only have found out at a very bad time.
