Here's a quick blog on an effect i noticed last week.
I couldnt find any thing by googling around.
Nor could i see any fixes in later Cumulative updates.

Good analysis and writeup.
And yep, I'd agree, looks like an optimizer bug in SQL Server 2005, though as you imply, it seems to be fixed in 2008.
