Browse for more in SSMS Connect to Server dialog does not display everything

  • Hello all,

    When I select the <Browse for more...> option in the SSMS Connect to Server dialog, several of the servers that I can manually key into the Server name and connect to are not visible in the browse list. Can anyone tell me why this is? Thanks in advance for any ideas and/or suggestions!

  • One of the reasons could be that the instance is hidden?

    Configuration manager -> SS2K5 Network config ->Protocols for <<instance>> -> properties -> Hide instance?

  • There are lots of reasons, but in my experience, there are two (or three) biggies...

    First is what nabha already mentioned: some instances are hidden and won't ever show up.

    Second, is that the network browsing technique that is being used just seems to be unreliable. As there's no central registry to query for all SQL Servers (AFAIK), I think that the "Browse..." option just watches the network traffic for several seconds to see if any SQL Server traffic goes by and pulls the instance names from that. If an instance does not happen to have any network activity during this time, then it won't show up.

    The third is that in larger enterprise networks, this Browsing collector can definitely get overwhelmed and lose instances.
