Ok, SO i've just begun to learn SQL and have no clue about programming in general but I learn fast. Right now at work and have been given the opportunity to be the first defense against SQL errors and issues.
Such is my dilema:
[MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver][SQL Server]ct_results(): user api layer:internal Client Library error: Read from the server timed out
This is upon trying to pull a report in a propietary application. Where do I start?

G'Day
Wow. Where to start... Lets deal with the immediate problem first, then move to the more general question of how to learn everything there is to know about being a DBA.
You state that the application is proprietary. Did your company develop the app, or another company? If another company, do you have tech support? If yes then get them on the phone. If not another company then do you have access to enterprise manager or query analyzer? Your original post says that the app is using a sybase ODBC driver. Is the driver a sybase driver, or are you running against a sybase backend?
Given a little more information we may be able to help.
Now, on to the more general question: Where and how do you learn to be a DBA?
Do you have access to any instructor-led courses in your area? You certainly can learn "hands-on", but it sounds like you are about to be hit with a live system and no prior experience. I'll warn you in advance that this is going to be painful.
Help us out with a little more info.

Well,

Well, the app was developed by us therefore only supported by us. Don't know what driver but will get back today with an answer...
The only training i'm going to have time for is at home and work. I set up SQL 200 Server at home for practice on Windows 2003 Server.

Well what??

I do have access to Enterprise Manager and Query Analizer. I have a ton of books at my disposal but I learn better hands-on.

Ok, so i'm looking at the ODBC Data Source Admin and it's the Sybase ASE ODBC Driver 3.50 SYSYBNT.DLL and it's from April, 1999. Maybe I need to update this? Also thinking there maybe a service that needs to be restarted? If so, how do I find out?

Are you using Linked Servers (Sybase to Microsoft SQL Server)?
If not, then you shouldn't be using a Sybase driver with Microsoft SQL Server. (And if you aren't using SQL Server, then this is the wrong site for you to be posting in).

Yes, we have a Sybase Server and this is where the data is stored. I've found what the issue was. Our Sybase server was taken down to resolve some other issues we were having, which caused all communication to this server to generate errors.
Thanks guys, appreciate your input.
Please enlighten me as to how to proceed in learning more in depth about being a DBA.
