Boot Camp Style SQL Server Training

  • I am a developer moving into a SQL Server DBA role at a small company, basically, no one has the role right now.  Due to our small size, I am considering a boot camp style program to maximize time away.  The trainings I have looked at cover the MS 2072 and 2073 course in 5-7 days.  Does anyone have experience with these to recommend a company, preferably with a training in WI or Chicago area?  How about pros and cons of this type of training? Thanks.

  • Haven't really looked at this. It seems boot camps are good for preparing you for the test, but not for learning. That's a gross statement, but what I've seen.

  • I depends on your learning style.  I personally like online training on my own.  Sometime classroom style doesn't move at the pace I want.  Think about what's best for you.  Try some online courses before signing up for the boot camp (lots of frre or at least parts of the course may be free)  If there are too many distractions - you can't close your door and hang up the phone, then maybe getting away is good.  Read articles on this site and start exploring the system (preferably on a test machine)

I'd alway go for getting away if my boss would pay for that course in Bermuda..

  • My choice would be Geek Cruises .Net Nirvana III:

They have some seminars on SQL Server Yukon which is really what you should start learning. Beware of out-dated training classes. Don't spend too much time or money learning SQL Server 2000 or Windows 2000.
