Books with very detailed replication chapters

  • Are there any books in your library that go into advanced replication concepts? My library of books is lacking a tome that has any meat to it when it when convering replication.

I want a book that describes each agent to the degree that I have a full understanding. For instance, what exactly is going on behind the scenes of the Snapshot agent, and is there a better way to monitor what is going on instead of looking at an error message that says, ' It's been 10 minutes since the snapshot agent offered an update..'

I did find some great material on Microsoft recently about best practices, but I continue to find myself wanting more.

A snapshot is just a select * from a table into some text files on the distributor. Going to the sub it is a bulk insert

  • Hi,

There's no magic book around (I know only one book about transactional replication, written by Hilary Cotter). However, Books Online contains many bits about how things work, you just have to take your time and find and read them. You should get familiar with the distribution database, the replication SPs and the different agents. For the first two, there are pretty good descriptions about the objects (just type in the name of the object in BOL or check the replication system stored procedures section), about the agents you find a command-line reference in BOL under the command prompt utilities section. If you understand all of the parameters listed, you know everything 🙂

  • I constantly find myself with questions related to how replication works and what will happen if I do this or that. You are right though after digging around in BOL for a bit, I found almost everything I was looking for except for some case studies.

  • If you raise a few of your questions I try to point you to some specific resources. I've been learning transactional replication for two years (and totally lame in merge replication) and although I know a lot about it, still there's a lot to learn 🙂

  • There is one Book on replication that has step-by-step instructions on many of the setups http://www.amazon.com/Server-2005-Replication-Definitive-Guide/dp/1590596501

BUT it is mostly BOL with Pictures... Nothing ( or to me at least) is new there. Nothing under the hood, no inner workings, etc ...

But it maybe it is what you are looking for.
