Blog issues: not syncing changes & missing links for original post and comments

  • Over the past two days I have updated 2 of my 3 most recent posts ("SSMS Tip #3" and "Differences Between Various Binary Collations"), but the changes aren't coming though. For the old site I was told that it could take up to 48 hours to sync, but prior to the sync breaking it never actually took more than 4 (maybe 6?) hours. So not sure how long to give it now, but it looks like it might not be working.

Also, regarding the bottom / end of each blog post:

    • posts synced directly into new site (not migrated from old site):

      • has links for "Original post (opens in new tab)" and "View comments in original post (opens in new tab)"
      • missing "Related Content" section (below social buttons / rating / "add to briefcase")

    • posts migrated from old site (not synced directly into new site)

      • missing links for "Original post (opens in new tab)" and "View comments in original post (opens in new tab)"
      • has "Related Content" section (below social buttons / rating / "add to briefcase")

    Take care,

    Solomon...

  • Hi Steve. Any ETA on the auto-sync of blog changes? I received a notification that my newest post, "Feature Restrictions in SQL Server 2019 are Worse Than Useless: a False Sense of Security And Wasted Opportunity",  will be featured in the daily email on the 19th, yet there are changes that have not been synced into the version of the post that is on this site.

Auto-sync aside, would it at least be possible to place a "Re-Sync" / "Refresh" / "Re-Import" button on the blog list page (e.g. https://www.sqlservercentral.com/blogs/source/sql-quantum-leap ) and maybe also the author article + blog list page (e.g. https://www.sqlservercentral.com/author/solomon-rutzky ), next to each blog post, to kick off the process manually? I have quite a few posts that have been out of sync with the version on this site for months now. The idea is that the buttons only appear if the author / blog-owner is logged in and the "article" is a linked blog post. Also, if the refresh would only replace the content if there is new content found at that post's feed URL (i.e. URL not resolving, or returning an empty string, would result in no change/refresh). If possible, and if errors in the sync process are not being logged (I seem to recall that they were not logged in the old site), it would be great / helpful if any errors could be displayed in a pop-up so that I could either fix the issue myself, or at least provide helpful info to support when reporting the issue.

    Thanks, Solomon..

  • This is a lower priority item among some other things. We rarely have blogs change from most users. I'll check on this and see.

  • Hi Steve. I was wondering if there has been any movement on this. I understand that it's low-priority, but I now have many blog posts that are out of sync between the initial version that was imported into SSC.com and the current version on my blog. And, just like in my previous reply here, I just received notification that my most recent post, "SQLCMD: Prevent an Entire Batch From Even Parsing With One Magical Character (Cruel Joke #4)", will be featured (on Sept 15th), and I have already updated it.

Is there anything I can do? As I said last time, a manual process would be fine with me. I mean, if there really are that few people who update their posts, then I would agree that an automated process that scans all existing posts to compare to the current feed is low priority (and a waste of system resources). A button next to each imported blog post means that no service is needed to cycle through the posts. And, the button only needs to pull the current content from the post URL already stored in the system for that post, update the content field of the post (assuming the URL is still good and content was retrieved), and possibly update the modified date on the post.

  • No movement on this. I have no idea how many people update blogs and then we miss a change, but you are the only person that has pointed this out. This is a low priority item, and not sure when we'd tackle this. It shouldn't be that hard, but there are a number of other items that might come before it. I'm talking with someone next week as we've had some staff changes, and want to get some more regular work done on things like this.

I have deleted the import, which might be the best way to handle this. I don't know how often you update posts, but maybe sending a note to articles@ or webmaster@ is the easiest way to handle an update if this works.

  • Well, I can imagine that at least some others simply might not have noticed due to assuming that it does still update since the old site did. But regardless, I understand priorities and appreciate you trying to help in the meantime. I do see that the post has been removed, but for some reason it's not re-importing. I'm not sure what condition(s) trigger the import, so I'm not sure if I need to do something on my end to trigger it.

  • Hi Steve. The post is still not re-importing. Is there something I need to do on my end to trigger the import? Please let me know. Thanks.
