Blackberry or smartphone for DBA

  • Cellphone + Laptop with Broadband card is better.

IMHO, smartphone/blackberry are no good for technical professionals, they are better for C level executive, who are constantly exchanging emails and calls.

For DBA, if something needs to be done, he will need laptop with GOOD network connection from wherever he/she is.

  • Crackberries don't stand up vs the VX6800 with touch screen, full QWERTY slide out keyboard, and support for 8GB storage card. But it is Windows Mobile, so make sure you reboot every morning.

-Windows Mobile 6 on an Verizon Wireless VX6800

-OpenVpn client for getting on the network + the secure connection, via a WLAN or Verizon's Wireless Data Service

-WM6 Remote Desktop to "Terminal Service" into the SQL Server.

-Pop open SSMS and you're rocking your SQL Server via Mobile.

That's not even getting into SQL Server compact edition

It's just like you're in the office, only your screen is smaller, and hopefully you're some place way cooler.

  • We get Blackberries for on call personnel. As the Team Lead, its indispensible for keeping track of whats going on, and it sits on my night stand at night. If you set up your Outlook rules carefully, you can filter the emails that come through. I did try Idera's SQL Mobile Manager, but as my company wasn't prepared to shell out the money for it, I didn't put a lot of effort into getting it working, so I can't authoritatively comment on it's usefulness, but it did look good.

When I leave here (next Thursday), I'm going to have to get a replacement for myself if the new place doesn't provide one.

  • I have a smartphone (T-Mobile Dash) with Windows Mobile. It's not company issued, but I do use it for business as well as personal needs. The ability to have alerts from the database go to my phone when they're urgent is quite useful to me.

I haven't used a Blackberry. Thought about getting one, but there was a $100 price difference, and none of the feature differences were ones I see an actual need for. (The Blackberry I was looking at can do VOIP calls "for free", but I haven't used my "free" minutes up in a month ever. That was the main difference between the two phones.)
