My email to them has said I am not prepared to take off backups, and my worry is we won't have that space put in for them.Ok... no pun intended but let's backup a bit. Are you saying that your most recent backups are on the same disk system as the MDF/LDF files for the databases they back up? That's a form of career suicide in the extreme.
To see what that can cause, read here.

Jeff, I can see what you mean now. We do have an offsite backup solution that happens too. I am looking at some other possible options (cloud backups for example). Am actually enjoying the DBA thing again so much am now each evening going online and brushing up again on DBA stuff which I am bound to be rusty on. I know you never lose it but always good to make sure the whirly cogs of the brain are still nice and tight still and can react quickly.
Lyn, oddly we did have that once in my early days learning about now to (or not) be a DBA. It's funny not funny the stories you can tell.

I am being asked to cherry pick the important stuff.
Depending on who you ask, if you go around the company eventually you might find most all of it to be important.
Also cherry picking may require resources, time, time and time and knowledge. You need to know 100% of your system do do that. Any saving on space will come at a cost. For example can you guarantee every part of the system will work? If not - then I would stand my ground if I were in a same position. What I tend to do is reject taking any responsibility for any failure, no buts.

Do not be surprised that many companies have this kind of aproach. Windows/VM admin give me the C: and D: drive and say "that's it". When I show the correct way and that database backups, log files, tempdb's should be separated the answer is "I wouldn't be bothered." It's as if we have the luxury to do things by the book.
Everything boils down to how a DBA is valued in a company and whether she/he has any say. Often they don't. It does not surprise me companies have a "0-DBA's in company" approach.
