BIDS - Uncouple Variables and Toolbox

  • Argh. Another annoying feature of BIDS.

I want my variables screen across the bottom of BIDS and the Toolbox to the left side of BIDS, but when I moved Variables, it moved the Toolbox with it.

Does anyone know how to uncouple the two so I can have them in two separate spots?

  • If you right-click on the Variables tab, and select 'Floating', you should be able to drag it away and decouple it from the Toolbox. Then set the Toolbox to Floating as well. Re-set the floating Variables window to Dockable, then drag it down to the middle bottom of the screen until the bottom of the window is off the bottom of the screen. Right click the Variables window header and re-select Dockable. Double-click the Variables window header , and it should dock to the bottom of the screen.

To re-dock the Toolbox, right-click its window header and and re-set it to dockable. If it's not where you want it, drag it over to the side of the screen until it is partially off-screen. Double-click, and it should re-dock on the desired side.

  • I tried that before I posted, but Floating was grayed out.

This may be related to other VS problems I'm having, though.

Thanks for answering. I'll try this again after I fix my other problems.

  • Brandie

Floating might be unavailable because the toolbos is Auto Hide. If you turn that off, you should be able to drag the toolbox and dock it at the bottom of the screen.

    John

  • Really?

I'll check that out. It would definitely make my life easy if that's the only problem.

  • Let us know how you get on, Brandie. You can make the toolbox auto hide again once it is docked where you want it.

    John

  • Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I got swamped.

AutoHide was indeed the problem. Thanks for your help, John.

  • And yet, it's not permanent. The Toolbox keeps moving back to the bottom of my screen when I restart VS.

    This is annoying!

  • It sounds like your layout settings are not properly saving when you exit. Once you have your interface the way you like it, you can use the 'Tools > Import and Export Settings' option to save your windows layout. Then you can import the settings back in when you open BIDS.

  • After experimenting several times, I finally noticed a pattern. If I close BIDS out as normal (without moving the Toolbox), everything shuts down fine, no issues.

If I move the Toolbox (using the floating / dockable options) back over to the side. The Toolbox moves fine, no errors. But the next time I close BIDS after that move, BIDS errors out.

  • It looks like it's a general Visual Studio 2008 issue, rather than specific to BIDS:

    http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/362508/visual-studio-2008-sp1-crashes-on-close

I used to get devenv errors when running BIDS 2008 on XP Professional, but I've not had any since my desktop got upgraded to Windows 7 pro 64.

  • You rock, Dave23! Your Google-Fu is superior to mine.

That actually worked. I moved my Toolbox and no error when I closed BIDS. I open it up and it's exactly where I put things. Thank you.

  • Excellent! I'm glad that took care of it.
