sql server 2000 multithreading disabled ...
same database on server and workstation
The server has enterprise edition and the work station has standard edition...
Dell Poweredge 6650 1.4G dual Processor 4g Memory
Dell dimension 2400 intel celeron 2.4G 2G mem
How can one explain the work station consistently outperforming the server.I ran multiple explain plans and the only differences were a higher subtree cost on the server I have turned off multithreading to make the server as close as possible .
Any insights will be highly appreciated

Hi,
I had something similar with Dell servers twice when installing SQL Server: on 2 best servers with big hard drives the installation process took 2 hours. It took about 10 min for the Installation Wizard to come up. It was about 3 years ago. I have heard the explanations that it was taking tme for the install package to evaluate all hardware. But it should not be taking THAT long. The performance itself on the machines was good.
I would check where is your delay is by following the link to New England SQL Server User Group:
http://www.nesql.org/Files.aspx
and download this presentation by Andrew Kelly that says what do you have to monitor and have some examples:

Thanks yelena
I do not have 2005 so your solution may not apply.
