Best query editing & debugging tool?

  • Hi. I'm looking for some recommendations for query editing tools please? My sql skills are limited so I need something that's fairly intelligent, ideally visual, and can help debug problems in my queries and stored procedures. A code formatting button would be a nice extra. There are 40 tables and 50 mostly complex SPs in our schema, lots of relationships and about 20m records.

Could such a tool suggest code improvements if queries/SPs are found to be slow or ineffecient? Or am I hoping for too much?

I realise Redgate sponsor this forum so forgive me if talking about other products is not permitted.

SQL Ultimate Debugger looks interesting. Are plugins to MS SQL Studio just as good as a separate app? I've tried TOAD but it was unstable in our development environment. It would be really useful to hear views from people who have been using such tools for a while or pointers to round-up reviews of such tools. Thank you.

    Gary.

  • I like the new SSMS that comes with SQL 2008. You can debug with it. It also has intellisense.

  • Toad is a tool that could work for you. Roy's suggestion is an excellent one.
