We are about to start the process of trialing some 3rd party monitoring applications (redgate, idera, quest etc) and was looking for peoples thoughts / experiences on using these tools.
Ideally we'd like to have realtime monitoring as well as the ability to perform analysis / trends (eg - something like quests foglight).
any feedback is greatly appreciated 😉

you might need to better define exactly what you need and for how many instances. that will help you determine things.
the quest tools work well, but for real time monitoring and diagnosing of issues, I'd look at Performance Analyzer from SqlSentry looks outstanding.
For longer term monitoring, I'd urge you to spend 30 days with each of the tools, run them for the eval, get the data, and see what you think. The interface and having the data you want/need is important and all of them will work a little differently.

cheers for the suggestions so far chaps.
Steve, we are currently doing as you say but i was just looking for peoples experiences with the full versions, something i may miss with a 30day trial.
I like the look of SQL Sentry, thats next on my list after spotlight. We'll be trying them all because i know they've all got their own pro's and cons and i'll like to see what they each have to offer
We're looking to monitor 16 instances of sql server (15 sql 2005, 1 sql 2000). Primarily we're looking for real time monitoring but with the bosses bringin in a load of kpi's to adhere to i'm looking for something that will track / report on these (incl. availability, performance etc).
