Being Supportive

Not sure I'd want the end user starting up a database server on their own.

Why? It could be a mom and pop shop and you are just a consultant working for them part-time. Are you going to make them wait until you can get out there to start it up for them? (This is, of course, just an example.)

There are plenty of Mom and Pop type examples out there. Enforcing this would be unfair to them and could cost business to you down the road - if you are a consultant.

Starting up the db server is one thing - configuring it as an entirely different beast. Just like in an enterprise setting, there are battles worth fighting and some don't make sense to argue.

Now if the Mom and Pop want nothing to do with booting up the server, then that is a different ball of wax.

  • The conversation was in the context of how an IT department should function as a team to help the users in a business. If we're talking independent consulting for a mom and pop type shop I think the issues are completely different.

My statement about not having the user start the database server was from the point of view of a corporate IT shop. If the DB server is down, you probably want the DBA group involved, rather than having users "fix" it on their own.

In an environment with an IT team, I am with you on that one.

  • I tend to agree with Paul. I think users, or non-qualified people setting up DB servers get into trouble. If It is too busy, they ought to have a document with standards and procedures to let someone get things setup. Backups, maintenance, etc.

Now that depends on the business. Previous employer, DBA's had no access to the servers. We could stop and start the SQL Services, but if the server was down, the admins or comp operators had to deal with the hardware.

  • I guess example of users starting their own database server wasn't the best example. The point I was trying to get across is that when an IT Specialist has fixed the problem. That person should empower and teach the user on what the problem was. Then the steps necessary to fix it themselves later on.
