basic qn about tlog files

  • Hi,

I have one basic qn..when a drive is full ( db is in full recovery and has Tlog backups ) ,
and we change the db  from full to simple and shrink the log file, will it cause any data loss?

    Thanks

  • It won't cause data loss in the sense of data going missing from your tables or anything like that.

What you are effectively saying, however, is that you're willing to get rid of any log records in VLFs that are being kept from reuse just because they haven't been backed up.

You effectively lose the ability to do point-in-time restores to any point between the last log backup and the recovery model switch+shrink.

Also, if you intend to switch it back to the full recovery model, you will have to take a new full or differential backup to be able to take log backups again.

    Cheers!

  • No, but you will lose the option to backup Transaction logs and restore from thereon.
Recovering might end up in data loss.
