Barriers to Entry, Database Weekly (Oct 27 2008)

  • no,no,no, no fees to join sqlservercentral, ever, it would ruin it.

People have a problem, they do a search, a post from this site pops up, and voila there is their answer, no strings attached, no pop ups, no request for a fee to see the full answer, its all just there! Because of that people trust the site (its not after money) so they come back for more, and eventually they may as well go direct to the best source out there and join up, and who knows give a bit back by answering posts themselves. Thats how I got started.

I think a reason why people are polite and professional on this site is because its free and is so obviously contributed to by people who just enjoy sharing info, and they respect that so keep up the standards

The internet was developed to FREELY share information, lets keep it that way.

Dan mentioned experts-exchange, no tech site annoys me like that one, you type in a search, that site will often come up near the top of the list (strange that), be a verbatim repeat of your question (strange that) and when you go to the site teases you with a promise of an answer to your exact problem if you just wouldn't mind jumping through these hoops and coughing up money. I am never that desperate. 🙂

I was desperate once and the only place I could find my answer, apparently, was on their site. I got the boss to pay for a month, just so I could get the answer... It was wrong. Pretty much ended my love affair with the site at that point.

I can't honestly say why SSC is different, but it is.

I used to post there occasionally, before they became a paying site. At the time people gained points for answering questions correctly and could use those points to ask their own questions and for other advantages. Because the site only allowed one correct answer to a question, the backstabbing and fighting among the posters to be the one with the 'correct' answer was ridiculous and quite detrimental to the overall quality..

Here at least it's not a battle over who's right and whose answer is best and when someone posts a better answer I don't 'lose' anything.
