Hi All,
I'm working as a Jr.DBA. I was given a task to implement TDE on databases and I successfully implemented it. But one thing I could not understand is, why do we need to back up database master key and service master key? does backing up of SMK and DMK have any importance? If I'm restoring the database backup on to the different server what exactly I need to have. DO I need to restore the SMK and DMK that were backed up? and creating the certificate that was backed up?
Can any one let me know this issue.
Thanks,
Ravi.

Yes. Without them (SMK, DMK and certificate) it is not possible to restore the TDE database on other servers.
Actually that is the main purpose of encryption. To prevent data theft.
