backups sql server 2000

  • what is the difference betwen append to media and over write exisitng media....

in which scenarios do we use these.

    thanks for your help.

  • These are mainly leftover from years ago. People used to back up to tape directly on each server and the append was there to ensure you didn't overwrite the tape.

Now most people go to files. Append puts multiple backups in one file, overwrite makes a new file. The problem with append is that if you lose the file because of corruption, which can happen, then you lose all backups.

The recommendation is that you overwrite and use a new file every day (new name).

  • thanks a lot for your help. i was just going round and round assuming that there must be another secret to this

  • Append just adds to a tape, override means write over an existing data on tape. the best method of back is to do it to backup to disk, then backup to tape.
