Backups On Shared Drive

  • Hello all,

I am thinking about moving all backups off local servers and onto shared drives.

I did a quick test to see how much slower writing to the shared drive would be.

To run a full backup on about a 10G database locally it took about 2 minutes.

To run the same backup to the shared drive took about 9 minutes.(yikes)

What concerns me most is how this will effect performance when transaction logs are written to the shared drive.

Does anybody using shared drives for backups take a heavy performance hit?

    Thanks,

    B

  • Nearly everybody who backs up across the network takes a performance hit. And a reliability hit. Period. The question is whether it is "good enough" for you. Personally, I wouldn't do it unless forced by circumstances.

  • Thanks,

I am going to rethink the process.  I don't really want to go with a "good enough" plan.

  • You may want to consider keeping you backups local and then setting up another process to copy them off to your network repository.  This, in my opinion, would be better than lengthening the backup by so much.
