When setting up a backup strategy, I look at a few things.
How much data can I afford to loose?
How much disk space do I have for the TLOG?
Where am I backing up too?
For example one of my databases is on a cluster with a 1.5TB SAN. Data grows at about 200 KB per day. I have one LUN for the TLOG that is 200 GB. One LUN for Backups at 500 GB, One LUN for Systems DB at 50 GB, one for Qurum at 50 GB and the rest for data. The data loss in this case can be just about anything, although the boss says an hour or two. So I backup the TLOG every hour. Another database only supplies information to populate the website. That only gets backed up at night as the data doesn't change often. But the finanical information databases are backed up every 10 mins for the TLOG and 4 times a day for a differental and every night for a full.
Hope that helps. The real question is how much can you afford to loose and then how fast do you need to recover.

And then you're also moving those backups you make onto the SAN to tape or some external/offsite place, right?
