I found a strange behavior with SQL Server 2000 SP3a on Windows Server 2003. Using the EnterpriseManager on a client PC, I want to backup a database. I open the backup dialog, add a new backup destination, but here when clicking the button with the 3 dots to open the backup device location, this window does not open. The client remains blocked. When I look on the server, a messagebox has been opened that the drive A is not ready. When pressing 'continue', the client continues and the backup device location window opens. Strange!
PS. I never wanted to use drive A.

I can't replicate it (also SQL2k Sp3a on Win2003). It opens at the default backup location.
What's showing in the "File Name" field before you click on the "..." ?

The Filename contains 'C:\Intec'. The exact message on the server is 'SQLServer.exe : No Disk. There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a disc into drive A.'

There is a registry change needed. I had the same problem, made the change and everything was fine.
Can't find it right now, but I'll dig a little later.
Note it has nothing to do with SP3a, I had it while we were still on SP2.
GOT IT check mskb 281345 !!!

Thanks, it works!
Nethertheless a little bit strange behavior. Microsoft writes : "you MAY receive the error..." Looks like a sporadic problem.
The value was 0 on windows 2003 where I got the problem, on windows 2000 the value 0 made no problem.

The thing that drove me crazy is the server is in the glass house, I really can't / don't go in there.
With remote desktop it didn't hit me at first that I wasn't seeing the message, While working from home late one night had an operator check the machine. He told me about "this message" on the console (Ding, lite goes on). Then I got the Compaq back door that gives me a real console view, it became clear very quickly.
Then it was just a matter of finding the fix. Thank my partner Henry !!!

I found the new KB-article 319246. They have a downloadable hotfix now. The problem seems to occur in relation to linked servers.
