If I create a backup file from one server (database11202008.bak) which contains the date of the backup then trim the date off the file (database.bak) and I use the [dbname].bak format over and over again..
Am I using the same media header?
The reason I ask is that I can restore the full backup to the database WITH RECOVERY yet if I do a restore with NORECOVERY to the database to then apply logs/diff backups I error.
Using just the GUI window and not scripts I get the message below:
I am thinking of changing my backup scripts to have WITH FORMAT
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------
Restore failed for Server 'HQGEAC2'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The volume on device 'E:\SQL Backup\Data\DBSwsam.bak' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

Never mind...I tried to apply all files at once via the GUI and found that you cannot do this....
