Backup Tech

  • Am newer DBA In the platform of MS SQL SERVER all my previous experience in oracle database and start really to compare and I think I lost in some points like the online backup how can I do that?

    (how can i backup my data transaction by transaction rather than i waite for the downtime to do that)

    which is best technology to make my data save(SAN)?.

    Also am locate this link (http://www.sanbolic.com) that introduce good work, as I say I need your experience and your support.

    Actually my company using sql server 2005 and deal with large and sensitive, need to protect him, my impression to my manager no confident to make the backup throw tab device only he need online backup as I know in oracle

    am using sql 2005 with a good backround in Oracle.

    here in sql 2005 there is no hot or cold backup, if u search the help for backup what u find it is the backup u can take when the database are online, u dont have to wait for a down time other wise how u can take a log backup??.

  • Mobasha is right. You can take your full backups at anytime with a minimal performance hit. If your database is set to a recovery mode of "Full", you'll also want to do transaction log backups periodically (this depends on your activity level). I do full backups at night and differential and logs backups during the day. Hourly for logs, every 6 hours for differentials. Again, it depends on the load of your system. A SAN will work (various opinions about using it for direct backups are posted on this website). Your safest bet would be a local backup and then copy the backup file to the SAN or to tape. If the data is sensitive to the point of needing encryption, various third party tools can provied that for you (RedGate, Idera, Quest). If the databases are large, you can do compression with these third party tools as well.
