Backup sql 2000 to a network drive

  • Hi Guys,

Please any help on this...using EM, I ried to follow some posting I found over here, but I am getting crazy, I cannot see my network drive.please???

  • No, you can't see the network drive. But you can copy-paste the network path into the file location area.

To avoid network problems interfering with the backup, you could backup locally, then run a copy command as the next step to copy the backup file to a network location.

  • The paths from EM are paths that the SQL Server service account sees, not what your account sees. Don't forget this is a server service, it is not running under your account.

You can use a UNC path (\\computer\share) to back up, but I highly recommend you do not do this. Any hiccup on your network will cause the backup to fail and then you are defeating the purpose of backups. they need to work reliably because you never know when you'll need one.

Network issues happen all the time, but file copy and other protocols deal with them. The SQL backup will not.

Back up locally, then copy the files to the network if you need the space.
