backup restoring issue

  • I am trying to restore my database from the backup sets.

I have a full back (database1_bu_05102006) which was taken on 5/10/2006 and differential backups are schedules to run everyday at 1pm and 8 Pm.

But in between I have taken full backups on 8/2/2006 and 9/15 2006 onto to a differenct location and filename database1_bu_08022006 AND database1_bu_09152006 respectively.

But when I try to restore the db fromm the full backup file database1_bu_05102006 and differential backup taken today(09/25/2006) at 1 PM I am getting the following error.

Could not finf database ID 65535.Database may not be activated yet or may be in transition. Restore database is terminating abnormally.

What could be the reason for the error and can I take backups to a diff file than the schgeduled backup file.

    Thanks.

  • Remember what a differential backup is: all database changes since the LAST full backup.  In this case the differential backup taken at 9/25/2006 @ 13:00 has all changes since the backup taken on 9/15/2006.  You have to use that backup as the starting point for restoring from the differential taken on 9/25/2006.

You may want to take some time and read BOL about backup chains.

    hth,
