I was wondering if someone could tell me how to overwrite existing SQL backup files within your maintenence plan. I have a maintenance plan running each night that is doing full backups of each DB to a specific disk location. This is of course in addition to our external backup tapes. What is happening is, after a month our disk is becoming full. What I would like ideally is to have the last 5 backups of each database on disk. Is there a way to set a backup to be overwritten after 5 days? Thanks in advance.

Add a Maintenance Clean up task to your Maintenance plan, with this you can select to delete old backups that are over a certain age.
Run this nightly to clean up the old back-ups.

You don't want to overwrite backups. You want to have a unique name per day, to be sure the date the backup was made is correct. As mentioned above, the maintenance cleanup task will delete the older ones.
