Backup Locations

  • I have a 4 TB File share on our network where I am supposed to backup all my databases to. The problem I am having is that it is highly fragmented due to all of the activity. I'm just curious to see how other people may handle a situation like this. With the newer servers I always spec out the drives so that I have a backup drive however our older servers do not have enough space to put backups on. Managing backups on this file share is pretty painful because my backups and restores sometimes take a long time because of the fragmentation. I tried several defrag tools and because of the amount of activity on the disk it seems as if I can never get it to work.

Does anyone else have this problem? How do you deal with it?

  • First I never back up to the network. Too unreliable and it will fail when you least expect it. Like the day that your database goes down. Backup locally, copy to the file share.

Second, I'd just run a defrag utility on the share, maybe schedule it during the day when the share should be low activity. Work it in sections, get some files moved. Most defrag utilities can be stopped and restarted. If you having it run multiple times across weeks, it should clean things up.
