Backup job time

  • Hi,

We have SQL server 2005 EE x64 with SP3 on Windows 2003 R2 EE x64. We have 16 GB of memory. We have 10 databases and the 10 databases back file size (sum of all .bak file size = 13 GB) = 13 GB.

To backup this 13 GB, the full backup job is taking 10 Mins. Is this reasonable time to finish the full backup job in 10 mins to backup 13 GB of data?

    Thank you

  • Yes. I've seen it done before, tested the restores and it all worked. Thus 10 min is fine.

  • Yes it seems to be normal for the total size of the backup files..

  • Sounds reasonable. Curious, are the backups to local drives (DA or SAN) or to a network share?

Now that opens up an entirely new can of worms.

Ideally one would have multiple layers on the location of the backup files. Backup to disk/san and then to tape or other storage.

True, but depending on the hardware, things can be different. In our current PeopleSoft environment, a 50GB + backup to a SAN runs between 30 and 40 minutes. In the new environment we are setting up, the same backup runs in about 10 minutes. 32 bit vs 64 bit hardware, old SAN vs new SAN. Quite amazing actually.

  • Yes, its correct.

Taking 10 mins for backing up of 13GB is a normal and expected time. Dont worry about that, its working smoothly.

    - Win.

    Cheers,

    " Have a great day "

  • It's a 3 node cluster and the shared drives are on SAN and the backup drive is also on SAN

    thanks for your help

  • You're welcome.
