Backup Job failed due to enough disk space

  • my backup job is running everyday but, from the past 2 days it is failing due to :

    18210 :

BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device 'D:\SQLServer\MSSQL\BACKUP\TPO_ProdData\TPO_ProdData_db_201203150030.BAK'. Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.).

but , I am having 48g of free space on the drive & database size is 12g. the database is in simple recovery model. the job is scheduled to run at 12:00AM it is failing from the past 2 days. but when I ran it completed sucessfully. I have checked the drive is NTFS.

can you please any one let me know what the issue.

    Thanks

  • backups and databases on the same drive?

got other processes which are running around the same time which could cause file growth and shrinking? Index rebuild for example or if tempdb is on the d drive massive reports running sorting loads of data?

At the time when the backup ran and failed the disk space was insufficient. It is possible that post the failure event space was freed so when you come along to check you don't see a problem.

Can you supply a little more info on your disk setups, namely locations of the various files (data, log, backups), also how many other databases are backed up in the same job?

  • only one database is being backed up in the job. data, log files and backup files are stored on the same device and no other process is running at the same time.

.. data, log files and backup files are stored on the same device...

Data, log and backup files should be on different drvices from performance and DR point of view.

  • Is backup done via a script or a maintenance plan

  • It is done through a maintence plan.

  • Can you post a screenshot of the plan
