Hello,
I am starting to get the following error message when a transaction backup is scheduled to run:
Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility (Unicode), Version Logged on to SQL Server 'MAIN' as 'MAIN1\Administrator' (trusted)
Starting maintenance plan 'TEST Maintenance Plan' on 5/31/2005 10:33:43 AM
[1] Database TEST: Transaction Log Backup...
Destination: [D:\Backup\TEST\TEST_tlog_200505311033.TRN]
[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3241: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The media family on device
'D:\Backup\TEST\TEST_tlog_200505311033.TRN' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.
I have plenty of room on the D Drive and SQL 2000 is at the SP3 level. I also changed this to run on my E drive witch is a different drive that has more room (65GB). This transaction (TRN) backup job as been running fine until recently it worked Friday and not Monday. The regular backup (BAK) still runs fine. This error occurs when the backup is scheduled to run or when I manually run from query analyzer. The only KB I found is 297104 and it states the the problem was fixed in SP1. The problem exists with this database only. Other databases in the scheduled backup run fine. Is there a size limit to transaction file backups? The size of this database is about 3GB.
Thanks,
Joe

When I see this at client sites, it is often due to disk quotas or permissions preventing the file from allocating space. Are the other successful backup jobs using the same account (Main1/Administrator)? Does this account have disk quotas enabled? Can you log into the server where the backup is to be written, and create a test file just to check permissions, space, etc.?

Hello,
Thank You for the response. Disk Quotas are disabled and the other databases are using the same account in the Maintance Plan for full backup and transaction backup. I can get to the drive and create and delete files. I have plenty of space. This is a SBS 2000 Server and I do not see anything odd in the Event Viewer. I had a open window so I re-booted the server and SQL is acting normally except for the fact that this one database will not do transaction backups.
