There is a discussion in the office about which is better/right when creating a reoccurring backup of your database. The question lies between choosing file verse creating/linking to a permanent device in the wizard. In the end both still create a bak file... that will update on a job.
According to Microsoft that permanent device backups are preferred... just whats the real difference and will affect restoring backups?

There is at least one big difference when your database is bigger than any of drives. In this case, we can use device to split up the backup files.
