Backup cleanup maintenance - is it really foolproof ?

  • Hi all,

    This might sound weird.

Does the backup cleanup maintenance plan take into consideration of the need of a full backup in order to perform recovery using the incremental backups ?

I have setup a backup maintenance plan to clean up backup that are more then 2 weeks old and I am afraid that if a full backup is more then 2 weeks, it will be removed which will render all incremental backup that are less then 2 weeks old useless.

e.g.  I am doing a full backup every Saturday, and incremental on the rest of the days.
    1st week) 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    2nd week) 6, 7, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
3rd week) 6, 7 < backup maintenance plan ran and deleted week1(6) full backup as it is more then 14 days old

Essentially,  it render all my 1st week (7-5) incremental backup useless ?

    Is my understanding correct ?

    Regards,
    Alan

  • Correct. But they aren't necessarily rendered useless if you have server level backups that backs up the folder for your backups. Depends on the retention policy. You may still be able to use them even if they aren't on the original storage device.
But there isn't any kind of logic built into it - it will just delete files older than 2 weeks. If you need more than that, you would need to write your own maintenance script...which isn't a bad thing to do anyway.
