Hi guys,
I have a question, can we take backup during production hours, i mean can we take backup at anytime,
Does while doing backup does the tables and data is locked for the users.
Thanks

You can backup at any time. The backup adds load to the system, but it doesn't lock any objects.

My backup is saved on a network drive and completes in about an hour, my only concern was the users and application should not get affected when i take a full backup.
Thanks for your quick response Gail.

Don't backup to a network drive. It's slow and if the network glitches the backup will be useless. Backup locally and then copy the backup to the network drive.

Most people try to take full backups during off hours. This minimizes impact on users and gives a clean point in time to begin a restore if needed. Then take t-log backups during the day (every 15 minutes +-).
If their backup takes an hour (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm), and for some reason they need to restore back to 1:30, how would that be done ?

yeah we use to do a robo copy of the backup file to a network drive but now we dont have enough space on the local server to save a backup,
thanks for your suggestion.

Homebrew1 thanks for your concern, we do T-log Backup every 15mins and differential backups every 8 hours.
