Backup Assistance Please

  • Hello All,

Thanks for your time first off much appreciated.

The problem is this...With the price of storage space so low currently i have a server that i need to run a full LVL0 backup on once a week on weekends and then do LVL1 incrementals on during the week.  The size of the server is about 800GB with 7 databases over 100GB.  Each database takes about 4-5 hours to back up when doing the LVL0. Well this is not condusive..altho it works i need to find a way to make this go much much faster or at least to a point where IF it doesnt work in the LVL0 over the weekend then i can start this during the week and not have productions problems. Yea i know...a PITA    so i have heard of BCV (Business Continuance Volume) but only know that to work with Oracle situations.

If anyone has some ideas in what way i should go please let me know...

    Thanks Again

  • What's a LVL0 backup ??

    4-5 hours to backup a 100 G database ?!?!

My 280 G database backup with backupexec takes about 1 hour to tape, and if I use Idera SQLSafe, it backs up 280 G in about 25-30 minutes (to disk)

  • LVL0 = full backup .... LVL1 = incremental backups

Well these are running over a network to a backup server then to a tape library and it goes from there.  Currently using Netbackup and upgraded to backup to disk rather then tape.. backups up about 15% faster if that

I was thinking about going to a split-mirrored solution..any thoughts

  • I'm no expert, don't really know much about split-mirroring.  Does it require more hardware ?   A cheap way to improve might be to get SQLSafe (or a competitor). Then your backup file will go from 100 G down to about 15 G, and your backup time will drop by 60+ %.

Using SQLSafe, I backup one 250 G database to a local raid-0 drive (compressed to 45 G), then copy that to tape. On another server, I backup 250 G across the network to another server, and it only takes 45 min (also compressed to 45 G).

With faster speed, compression & the new object level restore in the 3rd party tools, I won't be using SQL's built-in backup function very often.

  • Well yes the use of SQLSafe(or others) would work but the problem with those are this... i am trying to take the pressure off the production server.  For those softwares to work usually its on the server itself and would use the horsepower from the local server(dont want that)  I am looking to gain  all the power from the backups to come off another source.  So it looks like split-mirror is my only choice....unless others have some ideaas i am not aware of.

    Please let me know...thanks

  • Your original post just mentioned the amount of time it took. At this point you probably won't get any new readers to this thread, so if you want to get suggestions about off loading the processing somehow, you might be better off starting a new thread with a good title.
