For a single server scenario does it make any sense to install two instances of SQL, one for application databases and one for Reporting Services/Datamining? Doesn't it defeat the purpose. Query the primary databases and spec the hardware appropriately.
I would say it depends on the hardware. The right hardware would make multiple instances worthwhile. It separates production from reporting, and you can configure each as needed regarding memory, processors, etc.
