I am trying to backup to a share on another machine. I have changed the SQL agent to run as a user with permissions for that share on the other machine. It still tells me it can't reach it. Does SQL Server have to run as this user too? When I run the maintenance plan it looks like SQLAgent (the process) it executing and therefore the permissions should be correct. Logging in as this user to the SQL machine I can map without incident. It doesn't appear to be a network issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, the agent runs under a separate account. No need to change the SQL main account.
