Background images in RS

  • I've been trying to get a full page background image to work in reporting services.  This is a government form that I'm placing in the background and have overlayed with the correct fields.

It works OK but I had to set the image dpi to 100 in order for it to size correctly.  That causes the form quality to be pretty poor.  If I try 300 dpi, the quality is good but the image is oversized and flows off the page even though the image size is set to 8.5 X 11.

Is there a trick to using a higher dpi image as a background and maintaining the correct dimensions when rendering the report?  I've got the latest SP installed.

  • I have a similar requirement, and got the 300dpi form to fit by incerting an Image tool, and making the form the background for that. This allows you to set the sizing to Fit of FitProporsional.

The problem i have is only half the form prints out some times, not sure if the Image should be tied to the body, a rectangle, a list background.

  • An answer! Check out the article at http://www.infoq.com/articles/Gogolowicz-Swanson-SSRS

The short answer (for SSRS 2008 anyway) is that 300dpi images and overlapping elements are supported in some renderers and not in others, and that they are only supported by the Image control. What these guys are doing is making their report work two different ways: Using 96dpi Rect backgrounds when 300dpi is not supported, and using 300dpi Image controls when it is.

The Print and PDF renderers support overlapping controls, while the usual preview and web renderers do not. If your report will always go to PDF then you can safely use an Image control to display your background, and put all of your Textboxes, etc, on top of it. If you need to support both PDF and web preview, you'll want to read through the more detailed solution in the linked article.

I hope that helps. It took me forever to find a good solution to this. We should help others find it faster!
