Azure availability groups requirements question

  • Does anyone know if Azure absolutely requires windows clustered services to support availability groups?

Most of the articles I'm finding in Google are fairly old.

I'm about to demo standalone SQL instances using availability groups to one of my senior leaders and heard someone say we were considering moving to Azure. Can Azure do standalone servers with AGs like virtual / physical servers can?

  • If you're just talking VMs on Azure, yeah. Same behaviors as VMs anywhere else. If you're talking Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database, different rules. Very.
